Geoff Moore discusses the "law firm of the future"

How has the legal world changed since you qualified?
I will try not to give away my age with this answer!
But to be honest, it’s not one single thing that stands out for me, but rather the rapid pace of change itself. When I first embarked on my career, evolution within our sector seemed to happen quite gradually and we had time to adapt. But nowadays, thanks to advances in technology, our entire profession and how we work can transform in what feels like an instant. We need to remain agile and constantly anticipate what lies ahead. It definitely comes with its challenges, but it also keeps things incredibly exciting!
We are witnessing this phenomenon again with the emergence of generative AI. It is going to completely transform how we work in a short space of time.
Given the seismic shifts in working patterns, how does the term “new ways of working” apply to Arthur Cox now and into the future?
It’s clear that the traditional world of work is evolving. People are looking for more options in relation to how they work and manage their personal and professional lives. Given the progressive nature of the firm, we had already introduced a Hybrid Working Policy before the pandemic arrived whereby people could choose to spend a portion of their time working from home. It is great to see how the policy has evolved and expanded and how it is working so well for both our people and the business. We encourage our trainees to spend more time in the office as it is a better learning environment, but there is flexibility there too.
More recently, we introduced a programme of Alternative Ways of Working, with the aim of providing options for those who might like to avail of reduced work hours. By offering these flexible working arrangements, we aim to support our people in achieving a healthy work-life balance while ensuring they can continue to excel in their roles and deliver for our clients.
Into the future, I anticipate that even more innovative methods of communication and collaboration will evolve and so long as it is the right thing for our business, our clients and our people - the sky’s the limit!
How has Arthur Cox embraced new technologies in how their people work and collaborate?
Technology has for many years been a key part of our firm strategy and is an area we continue to focus on and invest in. We want to ensure that all our staff have access to the best legal tech solutions in order to deliver the best outcomes for our clients – from reducing the time required to draft complex suites of documents using document automation to leveraging AI-assisted contract review tools when conducting due diligence on an M&A matter. As technology continues to evolve, such as the recent rise of Generative AI, we are keeping pace and ensuring our work practices continue to evolve too.
We have invested significantly in our digital workspace infrastructure, which ensures that we can all stay connected and engage productively and collaboratively with each other, and with our clients, regardless of where we are located.
Frankly, embedding technology into the delivery of legal services is here to stay and will remain a priority for us.
What’s different about the trainee programme at Arthur Cox compared to other firms?
The Arthur Cox Trainee Programme provides you an unmatched opportunity to engage in cutting-edge work for exceptional clients. You will be learning from and working with lawyers who are experts in their fields. We are the only law firm offering five rotations during your traineeship and we have a first-class Learning and Development programme that will support your professional growth and development along the way.
Our trainees also play a huge role in our Sustainable Business agenda. You will have the opportunity to work on pro bono projects and to support our various charity partners through volunteering. Our trainees also fundraise to support rural communities in Zambia in memory of our firm’s founder, Arthur Cox himself, who spent his final years there working as a missionary.
What does Arthur Cox offer its clients that other firms in Ireland cannot?
We have an established track record of handling the most complex and high-profile cases. Our clients choose us for the exceptional quality of the work we deliver – it's innovative, strategic, and always aimed at achieving the best outcomes for our clients.
In an increasingly globalised world, our international experience and perspective is another key differentiator. We have a wealth of international experience and a large network of global contacts, and this makes us the preferred choice for clients with cross-border needs.
